Welcome to Rumford Parti-Colored Poodles. We live in beautiful Brookfield, WI about 15 minutes west of Milwaukee and about an hour's drive from either Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, IL or Madison, WI. We will strive to breed genetically sound dogs, with wonderful companion personalities, as well as dogs that can compete in the UKC ring. Our dogs will be eligible for registration in both UKC & AKC. Parti-Colored Poodles may be shown in all events in UKC and all events in AKC except for conformation.
After retiring from breeding and showing Maine Coon cats, I decided it was time for a change. My husband Steve had started training and showing his Flat Coated Retriever Reiley in agility. I was impressed with the relationship he has formed with his dog and thought that perhaps I needed to have my own dog and train it for agility too. I had seen some lovely Poodles being shown in agility and thought they jumped well and that perhaps this was the dog for me.
My hunt for my Poodle began by surfing through websites. This is where I saw my first Parti-Colored Poodles and I was astounded by how beautiful and dramatic they were. Previous to this adventure on the web I had only seen solid colored Poodles and was elated to see how stunning a dog could be. I called up a breeder in Wisconsin to see if they had an available female but they did not. She suggested that I call a breeder from Oklahoma City by the name of Sue Abeln.
Sue is the owner of Kit-Sue Poodles. Sue told me about some puppies she had available and told me about this one puppy she was going to keep but most recently had decided to let her go. This was to be my Desiree. I flew to Oklahoma City, picked up Desi and flew back home that night. She sat right next to me in the plane, calm as could be.
I thank Sue from the bottom of my heart for entrusting me with this absolutely fabulous girl. Desiree has exceeded all of our expectations and she continues to amaze me!
Desiree started obedience classes almost immediately and we are now in level Novice III. She is so eager to please and unbelievably clever. In the summer of 2006 we started private lessons in agility. We are very careful not to push too hard since she is such a young dog.
Missing the show circuit, I decided that it might be fun to show Desiree in conformation. Two days after that idea we started conformation classes, and by the end of the week Desiree and I went to our first UKC dog show.
Desiree did very well considering both our lack of experience and knowledge by placing two times in the Gun Group, where she was awarded two majors towards her championship. The judges were fabulous and very helpful as she repeatedly jumped up on me while I was taking her around the ring.
At our next show she placed once
in the Gun Group but it was from a judge who had used her at the first show so we were unable to use that award towards her last major. At our third show Desi Championed by placing Best Gun Dog out of a group of 11 dogs. She did that in both rings on Saturday. What a way to become a Champion. It was very exciting. We are setting our sites for becoming a Grand Champion.
In September 2006 Desiree obtained her Canine Good Citizen title (CGC). Desiree was awarded her first rally title RN and her CD title in obedience at the same show. (June '07) There is nothing like having a well-rounded dog who enjoys all of this so much.
There is much testing prior to mating a dog, including but not limited to:
von Willebrands Disease (DNA test for vWD)
Hip Certification (Desiree has had a successful preliminary x-ray)
After her testing has been completed successfully, I plan to send Desiree back to Kit-Sue Poodles to be bred with one of Sue's lovely males. I can't wait to see what she produces. Poodles are just like potato chips -- you can't just have one. I just might have to get another sometime.
